Books Build Better Futures
Sharing a love of reading, rhyming, singing and talking with your baby is one of the best things you can do to give your baby a head start in life.
Research into early brain development shows that a child’s ability to learn and to develop pre-literacy skills is greater if they are read to from birth.
The Better Beginnings Family Literacy Program is coordinated by the State Library of WA and delivered through public libraries to support parents as their child’s first teacher.
Better Beginnings brings together babies and books, and families and libraries through a range of activities such as:
- Baby rhyme and story sessions hosted by libraries
- A range of books, rhymes and songs to share with your baby
- Family Reading Centres and books about parenting
- Help with finding and choosing books for your baby and you
- Parent information events with health and library professionals
- Story-time boxes with books, puppets, instruments and more to use in playgroups.
Contact your local public library to find out about ways they can help you to enjoy reading with your baby to give them Better Beginnings.
“I started reading to my baby at one week. My husband thought there was no need. Now our baby is three months old and loves it. Better Beginnings helped me to decide which books were good for my baby and showed us how to have fun reading, doing rhyme and actions and teaching our children”
Free Better Beginnings Reading Kit
Parents with new born babies can collect their free Better Beginnings reading kit from their local library or from their Community Child Health Nurse.
The Better Beginnings free reading kit includes:
- A free gift board book for your baby from your local council
- A nursery rhyme frieze and a BB poster
- A list of first books for babies and toddlers
- A brochure with tips for enjoying reading with your baby
Funding Partners
The State-wide development of Better Beginnings has been made possible through funding from the State Government of Western Australia, the Rio Tinto WA Future Fund and supporting Western Australian Local Governments.
